Abstract Artist

About

Rebecca Perkins was born in Orlando, Florida, and moved to Maryland at a young age. She is a self-taught mixed media artist who creates abstract paintings rich in textural depth, vibrant colors, and fluidity.

Rebecca was born three months premature which left her significantly visually impaired, and also deals with chronic mental illness. Visually, playing contact sports in school was limited, so she gravitated towards creative writing and art. Rebecca tends to be introverted and finds that art allows her to express her emotions in a nonverbal way, which has become a particularly therapeutic element in her healing process from depression and anxiety. As a young woman with a mental illness, her art serves both as an ever evolving form of self-expression as well as a critical means of coping, distress tolerance, and self-healing. Art has given Rebecca a vision of hope and belief in herself. Despite having a disability, she is not defined by such, and is driven to paint her emotions, and share her story to reduce stigma of the disabled through the art that she creates.

After high school, Rebecca published several poems in college literary magazines, and studied psychology and human services briefly before deciding to pursue her passion as a freelance artist full-time. In 2015, Rebecca began showing her work, and has since exhibited her paintings in many exhibits and galleries both locally and regionally, as well as completed work for site installation, private commissions, and charity auctions. Her first solo show was recently at the Washington County Arts Council's Main Gallery in Hagerstown, Maryland.

She is passionate about the role art and creativity play in the healing process, and has participated in several group exhibits showcasing art as a means to destigmatize and raise awareness about mental health, suicide prevention, and substance use disorders.

Rebecca has experimented with many mediums and styles, but always gravitates back to abstract and mixed media. She currently utilizes alcohol inks, acrylics, mixed-media, and collage in her work, and is interested in future ventures to include fluid pouring, resin, and gelli printing.
